Sunday October 2
The room was quite comfortable, and the breakfast was filling. We sat around with the family for a little while and learned a bit about their lives. They’ve lived in South America, Spain, England, and Italy obviously. That sort of thing we never would have learned about the guy working the front desk at the hotel. We also learned all about skiing in this area, as Roberto is a ski instructor in the winter. I’ve never been, but based on the description and the prices, I’d highly recommend it.
Today was our second soggy day. We were able to get most of Treviso done before it got to heavy. Because we were here on Sunday morning we weren’t able to get into the 2 churches that we wanted to see. But the hymnal music flowing out of the doors was lovely and worth listening to for a couple of minutes. There was a nice open air market, crowded with umbrellas, where I saw a loaf of bread the size of a 3 year old kid.
We headed to Vicenza in hopes that the rain would let up. It only got worse, so we couldn’t do anything there. It’s a city full of things to do, so we’re going to rearrange our schedule a little for tomorrow and head back to it. Let’s just hope it doesn’t rain again.
Bassano del Grappa was the same way. This is where we are staying tonight, so we walked around a bit in the rain, and then drove to our B&B. We’re going to go back there in the morning as well, as it looks like it has a lot to offer.
Le Fate Corbezzole www.corbezzole.it was great. I hate to compare them to one another as they are all very different, and special in their own way. But thus far Corbezzole has the nicest bathroom we’ve had. The building is nicely decorated, a common area inside and out. As is obviously the theme, the best part is the owner. Claudio drove out to meet us and lead us to the house when we called to say we couldn’t find it. Then we stopped off at his restaurant for a glass of wine and conversation. He runs the restaurant, the B&B, and a store which is sort of an antiques/collectibles store. He says he collects all sorts of things, and after 30 years, he decided to share his stuff. So the restaurant is decorated with it, and everything in the restaurant is for sale, so if you see something you like, ask about it. We talked about the local liquors, Bassano is where Grappa, our new favorite drink, originated. He is also a hotel consultant, and has helped start 30 different ventures. He told us that the taxes on a hotel are 3 times as much as a B&B. Which means that when I finally open the Villa Virginia, it’s going to be a B&B!
We go to bed tonight with our fingers crossed that there is no rain tomorrow as it is going to be our fullest day yet.
